Visual Basic 6: Design, Specification, and Objects
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (19 July, 1999)
Author: Billy S. Hollis

Visual Basic 6: Design, Specification, and Objects
Excellent book. Of particular note are the chapters on software development issues of gathering requirements and application design. The requirements/specification discussion is the best I have ever seen, and this alone makes the book worth buying. The object oriented programming in Visual Basic 6 treatise is excellent, too.

If you are a VB6 developer, this is a "must have" book for your reference shelf.

Read This First - Then Charge!
One of the best purchases I ever made. This book is an invaluable resource for me. It points you in the right direction for developing VB apps and objects by helping you to draw on your experiences, intellect and insight and offering his. It exposes weaknesses with VB developers and offers some real, workable, practical solutions.

Please Read This First. The tackle you next project with renewed vigor, increased insight and I'm sure, a greater probability of success.

Interesting, good read
Interesting combination of analysis and design principles & methods with object oriented programming with VB. Not a detailed look at any of these three topics, but this is a well written and easy read and has some really helpful tips. The author states that he is using the 80/20 rule in covering the 20% of the material that helps with 80% of the needs. I highly recommend this book for someone just getting into programming VB, looking for some more formal methods of approaching their work.

Swamplands of the Soul: New Life in Dismal Places (Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analysts)
Published in Paperback by Inner City Books (September, 1996)
Author: James Hollis
Average review score:

The Deeply Authentic Life
For those of us who struggle with uncommonly difficult fates -- and the attendant uncommonly difficult mother, father and other complexes -- James Hollis is among the few unsentimental Jungian analysts who writes with an integral awareness of object relations theory and the DSM and the paradoxes of individuation and an authentically lived life of integrity. "Consciousness broadens and enriches us, though it may be dearly paid for." Good case and dream studies and a discerning teacher. An unfortunately melodramatic title, but recommended.

Great Book
This book is absoultly great. The only drawback of the book, if there is one, is that after reading each page, I would sit and think for about 10 minutes. If you are open to the material, it will absoultly rock your world. Go for it. Take the journey. I'm reading his other books too and the guy is just amazing.

A warm and wise little book on the dark corners of the soul.
This is the latest of a wonderful series of small, warm, wise books by Jungian analyst James Hollis. This one visits the dark places of our soul that are far too often avoided from fear or mere inattention. There is a poetry that runs through Hollis' work that is rare in Jungian literature. Perhaps it's there because he loves poetry himself so much and quotes it extensively and aptly, but his own prose reads like poetry, yet without sacrificing lucidity. I can't imagine anyone not learning something from this and other books by James Hollis.

A great read
Her Private Eye just rocks along. The characters are wonderful, and the story pulls the reader right in. Witty dialogue is frosting on the cake. I really enjoyed this book--it has a permanent place on my keeper shelf.

First Rate Debut Novel
Shannon Hollis offers a sizzling debut novel with a first rate plot, in depth characters and fabulous sexual tension -- all woven skillfully until the satisfying ending. A real page-turner!

Temptation Plus!!!
This debut Temptation from Shannon Hollis delivers all the heat and sass you'd expect from the line, but it's got lots more. These characters will make you smile, laugh, yearn, the whole nine yards. And they'll stay with you long after you long after you put the book down. A definite keeper!

Pictures of Hollis Woods
Published in Library Binding by Delacorte Press (10 September, 2002)
Author: Patricia Reilly Giff
Average review score:

A portrait of an orphan...
Hollis Woods is an artist. She's only 11, but she has the gift to draw magnificent works of art. What Hollis doesn't have is a family--she was left on a corner when she was just a baby, and now she bounces from home to home, unable to stay for a long period of time. Once she realizes she's had enough of one foster family, or woman, she packs up her things and runs away for a few days. This pattern continues until she goes to stay with the Reagan family one summer. Suddenly she finds the family she's always dreamed about, and they are excited to adopt her. But Hollis can't quite accept that they truly want her, especially after she causes an accident, so she runs away again.

Giff has created a marvelous book of characters--the social worker, for example, that keeps placing Hollis is a despicable character. You feel it from the start when she spills mustard on herself, though I didn't realize you're supposed to think of her this way until half way through the book, when she spills coffee on herself. Hollis grows a bit through the book, enough to be realistic. The Reagan family is a good family, but not without their struggles. The format is not anything new--the current story is peppered with flashbacks, but it works for this tale. The story itself is plausible, even heartwarming (I was pleased to see a happy ending), and I believe it is the characterization that pushed it up to win a Newbery Honor.

A Home For Hollis
Hollis Woods is a very touching book. It's about a 12-year-old girl who was abandoned in the forest of Hollis Woods, which is how she got her name. Hollis searches from place to place looking for a home that suits her needs, dreams, and wants. Will she ever find her wonderful humble home'?
We really enjoyed reading Pictures of Hollis Woods. It is one of the best and most touching books we have ever read. We really liked this book because it kept us guessing, thinking, and predicting throughout the whole time. We think this book fits all of the needs for a great book. We recommend this book to everyone!!!!!

A Family She Never Had
Pictures of Hollis Woods was an excellent book about a troublesome foster child named Hollis. In the beginning Hollis talked about her old life, and throughout the book she refers back to it, and this was sometimes confusing to the reader. Hollis has traveled from home to home but never finds one that suits her best. Finally, she finds her soulmate, Josie, who is currently her guardian. They go through good times, but have trouble because Josie is getting old and tends to forget things. But soon Hollis begins a new life and is very happy to have a real family. We liked this book because it had realistic characters that you could relate to. We recommend it for everyone who likes a good adventure.

Developing Web Applications with Visual Basic. NET and ASP.NET
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (15 April, 2002)
Authors: John Alexander and Billy Hollis
Average review score:

Good info, poor proofreading
I read this book cover to cover, and worked through virtually all the examples. There's a lot of good information here, but proofreading is poor, and more information is needed to get some of the more complex sample code (provided at the author's web site) operational on one's local machine. That's rather frustrating after making a large investment in studying the text.

Most of the textual content of the book is well-written and helpful. Chapter 6, "Using ASP.NET Web Controls", is a bit garbled and buggy.

The web page for downloads related to the book currently has no errata section, in spite of the existence of plenty of errata. Perhaps one reason there is no list is that no easy way is provided to contact the authors or publisher with bug reports.

For a five-star rating from me this book would need:

(1) Another proofreading pass, with emphasis on making sure code examples work (with thought given to conditions on local machines that might cause particular ones not to work); and

(2) An active feedback loop between readers and the author. A discussion forum for reader-to-reader interaction would be helpful, too.

Good stuff
I found this book to be very helpful! It is an excellent source of information for the VB6 developer making the transition to .NET. The OOP chapter was great. It's great for learning to use the IDE and other related features. In reference to the last review: I found that there are revisions and a feedback loop available at the website.

Thanks for a Fantastic Read!!!
This was a delightful book to read. I am a very seasoned VB6/ASP Developer who is about to get his feet wet with .NET. Your book provides the direction I need to make a comfortable transition...Your examples were of the level I anticipated, and your dialog made it very easy to follow along.

My hat goes off to all of the authors who created this very readable and worthwhile book! Thanks so much!

The Complete Guide to Marketing Your Law Practice
Published in Paperback by ABA Publishing (01 April, 2001)
Authors: Hollis Hatfield Weishar, James A. Durham, James Durham, and Hollis Hatfield Weishar
Average review score:

Good book, but not useful for a small or solo firm
Overall this book had a lot of good points which I hope to incorporate into my practice. However, there is only one thirteen page chapter on how to market yourself if you are a solo or small firm. The majority of the rest of the bok is on how to market a larger firm. As a solo practioner I would have liked to have seen more information in regard to my situation.

A must
It's a great book that every lawyer (partner or associate) should read and read again. No theory. Just real life stuff. And many many good ideas.

Creating a Life: Finding Your Individual Path
Published in Paperback by Inner City Books (November, 2000)
Author: James Hollis
Average review score:

A Pragmatic Guide to Individualtion
James Hollis' Creating a Life is a pragmatic guide to individuation - the creation of a meaningful life worthy of its soul. Hollis' no-nonsense straight up voice separates it from new age self-help titles while still remaining accessible to lay individuals who are awake enough to be drawn to it. This book is not a step-by-step guidebook; rather I romantically view it as the reflections of a man on the path who has stopped off at the adventurer's tavern to tell of his journey so far. Throughout the book Hollis reinforces the promise of both what is attainable and what is at risk if one embarks on the quest. He also sprinkles a series of questions throughout the book that may illuminate a thread of understanding in one's life, one that might lead to the center of one's Self.

New by James Hollis!
Creating a Life is a powerful commentary on the importance of the examined life, illustrating how we may come to an understanding of our life choices and relationships by exploring our core complexes and personal history.
With insight and compassion grounded in the humanist side of analytical psychology, Hollis elucidates the circuitous way of individuation. The text is deeply enrighed by the inclusion of poetry and excerpts from the works of modern writers (John Fowles, Rilke, D.H. Lawrence, Pascal, Kierkegaard, etc.).

A Texas Gingerbread Boy story!
This is a take-off of the Gingerbread Boy. I loved using it in my kindergarten classroom to compare the story with the familiar version. The children loved the antics of the Jalapeno Man!

Grenada Ghost: Romance, Suspense, Murder
Published in Paperback by Wayne Brathwaite Pub (March, 1999)
Author: Lloyd Hollis Crooks
Average review score:

Grenada Ghost
Lyle Gordon, the 8-year old rustic, leaves his native Trinidad and Tobago with the ambitious expectations of becoming a friend of John Wayne and enjoying the American largesse. Instead, he meanders through poverty in his Aunt Lily's tenement.

"Grenada Ghost," a most unique work of suspense fiction, depicts the struggles, romances, politics, humor, and misdeeds of Caribbean people scattered throughout the diaspora. In the West Indian Labor Day parade, Lyle translates the concise imagery of the Caribbean tongue for Constance Wagner, the Jewish reporter, and a vengeful reveler murders her.

Two greenhorn detectives solve the murder by going into the protagonists' background.

This book is a reality checker and a heart warmer

No novelist before has written a text in this genre.
"I have never read anything like GRENADA GHOST. It is an excellent piece of literature," says REV. FATHER HOWARD K. WILLIAMS, St. Agustine's Episcopal Church, Brooklyn, New York.

"Best Caribbean-American novel...The plot, romance, suspend and murder, unfolds within Caribbean neighborhoods of New York City. It is a pity that GRENADA GHOST was not published when the television series, MURDER SHE WROTE, was around because Lloyd Hollis Crooks would have made a bundle and Angela Lansbury would have had a field day solving the murder...Every Caribbean-American deserves to read the novel. It's about you, and, if not,it is about your friends and family." REVIEWER H.G. RAVI, EVERYBODY'S Magazine.

"You are a helluva storyteller, Lloyd Crooks! Your work stands out among the other illustrious novelists of the Caribbean." DR. CLINTON CRAWFORD, Interviewer, 91.5 FM

"Crooks' work is highly emotive as he beckons and with cunning slight of pen finally draws the reader farther into the recesses of his own intimate being to seek the answer. His artistry is apparent, not only in the juxtaposition of diverse themes, but also in the variety of language. His use of the Caribbean dialect ribboned to the standard vernacular creates a balance and lends tonal color which, in itself, is representative of the very topics of race and culture that characterize GRENADA GHOST." CARIBBEAN LIFE BROOKLYN EDITION

"No novelist before had taken that ethnic energy called Labor Day Carnival in Brooklyn and weaved it into an international suspense thriller; Lloyd Hollis Crooks has, in GRENADA GHOST." KAI CEE, Freelance Reporter, Mozambique.
